Is Rye Meadow Ranch a petting zoo?

No. Rye Meadow Ranch is a working cattle ranch and agritourism destination dedicated to agriculture, education, and meaningful hands-on experiences. While guests have opportunities to interact with our cattle, our goal is to help visitors connect with agriculture, learn about Scottish Highland cattle, and gain a greater appreciation for responsible animal care and farming. The health, safety, and well-being of our animals always come first.

What is a Highland Cow Experience?

A Highland Cow Experience is a hands-on visit at Rye Meadow Ranch where you'll have the opportunity to meet our Scottish Highland cattle, learn about the breed, interact with the herd, feed approved treats, take photos, and enjoy time on our family ranch.

Where is Rye Meadow Ranch located?

Rye Meadow Ranch is located in Bradenton, Florida.

Do I need a reservation?

Yes. All visits are by reservation only.

How long is the experience?

Our standard Highland Cow Experience lasts approximately one hour.

Visiting the Ranch

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on grass and uneven ground. Since you'll be interacting with live farm animals, there is always a chance of encountering dirt, mud, hay, or manure. We recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting a little dusty.

Will I get dirty?

Maybe a little, and that's part of ranch life! Our cattle love attention and may rub against you, and farm animals don't always operate on our schedules. We regularly clean and maintain our cattle areas, but authentic ranch experiences can include dirt, hay, and muddy conditions depending on the weather.

What happens if it rains?

Highland Cow Experiences may continue during light rain or typical Florida weather conditions. However, visits may be postponed due to lightning, severe storms, excessive heat, flooding, or other unsafe conditions. If Rye Meadow Ranch cancels a visit, guests may choose to reschedule or receive a full refund.

Are there bugs?

Yes. We are located in Florida, and insects and wildlife are a natural part of outdoor life. Rye Meadow Ranch utilizes routine pest control and maintains clean cattle areas, but guests should expect mosquitoes, flies, bees, spiders, fire ants and other common Florida wildlife.

We recommend applying sunscreen and insect repellent before your visit, especially during the warmer months.

Can I wear sandals?

Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended. Guests will be walking on grass, uneven terrain, and may encounter dirt, mud, hay, and manure.

Can I bring food or drinks?

Guests are welcome to bring bottled water and other non-alcoholic beverages to stay comfortable and hydrated.

Guests with medical conditions, dietary needs, or young children are welcome to bring snacks or beverages as needed.

Outside meals, alcoholic beverages, and treats for the animals are not permitted.

Is there a restroom available?

At this time, restroom facilities are not yet available. As Rye Meadow Ranch continues to grow, adding guest amenities, including a restroom, is one of our future goals.

Hand washing and sanitizing stations are available for guests, and we encourage visitors to plan accordingly before arriving.

Is the ranch wheelchair accessible?

Our property consists of grass and uneven terrain. While many guests successfully use wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility aids, conditions may be challenging depending on the weather and ground conditions.

Our Cattle

Are your cows Scottish Highlands?

Yes! Rye Meadow Ranch is home to Scottish Highland cattle and Highland crosses. Our herd includes a variety of colors, ages, and personalities, giving guests the opportunity to experience these incredible cattle up close.

While some of our cattle are naturally smaller than others, every animal is unique. Our focus is on raising well-cared-for cattle while sharing the Highland breed through fun, educational, and memorable experiences.

Are your cows friendly?

Yes! Our cattle are handled regularly and enjoy interacting with guests. Like all livestock, they each have their own personalities, preferences, and comfort levels. We ask all guests to follow staff instructions and treat our animals with kindness and respect so every interaction is safe and enjoyable.

Can we pet, brush, or feed the cows?

Absolutely! Every ranch visit includes opportunities to pet and brush our cattle, hand-feed approved treats, and enjoy meaningful interactions while learning more about the Highland breed.

The health, comfort, and well-being of our animals always come first. Because animals are living creatures with individual personalities and needs, we cannot guarantee specific interactions, but our goal is to provide every guest with a memorable and authentic ranch experience.

Can I hold a calf?

If a bottle calf is on the ranch during your visit, you may have the opportunity to help feed or interact with it. However, for the safety and well-being of our cattle, we cannot guarantee that guests will be able to hold calves.

Can I bring treats for the cows?

No. To protect the health and safety of our animals, guests may not bring outside treats or food. Any approved treats or feed will be provided by Rye Meadow Ranch.

Can I request a specific cow?

While we'll do our best to accommodate requests, the health and well-being of our animals always comes first. Because animals are living creatures with individual personalities and needs, we cannot guarantee specific interactions, poses, behaviors, or participation.

Are the horns dangerous?

Scottish Highland cattle naturally have horns, which are an important part of the breed. While our cattle are gentle, they are still large animals, and all interactions take place under staff guidance to keep everyone safe.

Do you guarantee cuddles, specific animals, or certain photos?

No. Every visit is unique because every animal has its own personality and comfort level. While we always strive to create an unforgettable experience, we cannot guarantee cuddles, specific poses, behaviors, or interactions. Our animals' health, comfort, and well-being always come first.

Do you raise cattle for beef?

Yes. Rye Meadow Ranch is home to both our Scottish Highland breeding program and our growing beef cattle program. While our Highland Cow Experiences focus on education and connecting guests with our animals, we also believe in helping people better understand where their food comes from and the important role responsible livestock producers play in agriculture.

Children & Pets

Are children welcome?

Absolutely! Families and children are welcome. Children must remain under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian at all times.

Can I bring my dog or other pets?

No. For the safety and comfort of our animals, guests, and visiting pets, outside animals are not permitted on the property.

Photography

Can I take photos?

Absolutely! Guests are encouraged to take photos and videos for personal use throughout their visit.

Can I book a professional photoshoot?

Professional photography sessions are available exclusively through our photography partner, Dakin Images.

Because professional sessions require additional preparation, dedicated handlers, and designated photography locations throughout the ranch, outside professional photographers are not permitted without prior written approval.

Booking & Policies

Can we bring additional guests?

Please ensure each guest in your party has a ticket when booking. If your group size changes after booking, please contact us as soon as possible so we can prepare accordingly.

Why does each guest need a ticket?

Preparing for each Highland Cow Experience takes time and planning. We prepare our cattle, guest areas, treats, and educational materials based on the number of guests attending so everyone enjoys a safe, memorable, and well-organized experience.

Can I arrive early?

Please arrive no more than 5 to 10 minutes before your scheduled visit. Arriving too early may interfere with another scheduled experience or ranch preparations.

Can I stay longer?

To ensure the comfort of our animals and respect the schedules of other guests, experiences begin and end at their scheduled times.

What if I'm running late?

If you're running late, please let us know as soon as possible. We'll do our best to accommodate you, but depending on our schedule, your visit may need to be shortened.

What if someone in my group is sick?

If anyone in your group is experiencing a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or other contagious symptoms, please contact us to reschedule your visit.

What is your cancellation policy?

Reservations canceled at least 48 hours before the scheduled experience are eligible for a full refund.

Reservations canceled with less than 48 hours' notice are non-refundable.

If Rye Meadow Ranch cancels due to severe weather or unforeseen circumstances, you'll have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund.

Do you offer private events?

Yes! We offer birthday parties, educational programs, photography sessions, community events, and other special experiences. We'd love to help create a memorable visit for your group.

Do you host school groups or homeschool groups?

Yes! We love welcoming schools, homeschool groups, scout troops, community organizations, and other educational groups. Visit our Community Outreach page or contact us to learn more about educational opportunities.

Can I purchase farm-fresh eggs or merchandise during my visit?

When available, farm-fresh eggs and Rye Meadow Ranch merchandise may be available for purchase during your visit. Availability varies throughout the year.
