Meet Our Herd

Every member of our herd has a unique personality and an important place at Rye Meadow Ranch. From our pure Scottish Highland cattle to our Highland crosses, each animal is loved, cared for daily, and enjoys meeting guests during ranch visits.

Scottish Highland Herd

Our Scottish Highland cattle are the heart of Rye Meadow Ranch and the foundation of our purebred breeding program. Known for their gentle personalities, shaggy coats, and iconic horns, each member of our herd is raised with daily care, attention, and a commitment to preserving the qualities that make this remarkable breed so special.

Transparency Matters

Our Scottish Highlands and Highland crosses come from breeding stock measuring under 42 inches at the hip, which is commonly recognized as the miniature classification. Because every animal matures differently, adult height can never be guaranteed. We believe in honest, ethical breeding and will always prioritize the long-term health and well-being of our cattle over making size claims.

Members of Our Scottish Highland Herd

Alfie, yellow Scottish Highland bull at Rye Meadow Ranch

Alfie

Born: November 2025

Alfie is a handsome yellow Scottish Highland bull with a curious personality and a love for treats. He's always the first to investigate something new and loves knowing everything that's happening around the ranch. Whether it's a tractor passing by, visitors arriving, or something catching his eye in the pasture, Alfie is always there to check it out.

Halter trained and comfortable around people, Alfie has participated in photoshoots and educational events from a young age. His confidence, playful spirit, and fluffy coat make him a favorite with visitors.

Penelope, yellow Scottish Highland heifer at Rye Meadow Ranch

Penelope

Born: January 12, 2026

Penelope is our beautiful yellow Scottish Highland heifer with the sweetest, most gentle personality. She loves treats, being brushed, and spending quiet time with visitors.

With her adorable straight bangs, fluffy golden coat, and affectionate nature, Penelope has a way of making everyone feel welcome. If you stop brushing her too soon, she'll quietly follow you to politely let you know she'd like a few more brushes. And if you're lucky, she might even thank you with one of her sweet kisses.

Teddy, red micro mini Scottish Highland steer at Rye Meadow Ranch

Teddy

Born: May 2026

Teddy is our red micro mini Highland steer and the only steer in our Highland and Highland cross herd. He was originally bred by Pandarosa Miniature Ranch in Illinois and later came to us with Willow from a family who needed to rehome them. We were incredibly blessed to welcome them both to Rye Meadow Ranch.

Teddy is one of the calmest and gentlest little guys on the ranch. He has the sweetest big Highland eyes, the cutest little expressions, and a silly personality that comes out when he feels like it. Most of the time, though, Teddy is perfectly happy taking it easy, especially if food is involved. He is definitely one of our most food motivated members of the herd.

Tilly, yellow Scottish Highland heifer calf at Rye Meadow Ranch

Tilly

Born: June 3, 2026

Tilly is our sweet yellow Scottish Highland heifer with adorable curls and a playful, spunky personality. She loves pets, scratches, and spending time with people, but she's also full of curiosity and isn't afraid to let her personality shine.

One minute she's soaking up attention, and the next she's off exploring or bouncing around the pasture. Her sweet nature, playful spirit, and irresistible baby face make her a favorite with everyone who meets her.

Finley, dun Scottish Highland bull calf at Rye Meadow Ranch

Finley

 Born: July 20, 2026

Hamish is our handsome dun Scottish Highland bull and the newest addition to Rye Meadow Ranch. He'll be joining our herd in August 2026, and we're already counting down the days until we can welcome him home.

We can't wait to watch Hamish grow alongside the rest of our herd and share every step of his journey with our guests. We have a feeling this little guy is going to steal a lot of hearts.

Highland Cross Herd

Our Highland Cross Herd is an important part of our breeding program and includes cattle represented to us as a variety of Scottish Highland crosses. While each animal's background is unique, they all share the gentle personalities and unmistakable charm that make Highland-influenced cattle so special. They receive the same daily care, attention, and love as every member of our pure Scottish Highland herd and play an important role in the future of Rye Meadow Ranch.

Members of Our Highland Cross Herd

Archie, HighPark bull at Rye Meadow Ranch

Archie

Born: February 2026

Archie is our handsome HighPark/HighBelt bull with a calm, gentle personality. While he enjoys the occasional burst of play with the other calves, he's much more likely to be found napping in the pasture, soaking up pets, or waiting patiently for a treat.

With his sweet personality, teddy bear face, and distinctive brown ears and nose, Archie is impossible not to love. His easygoing nature and love for attention make him a favorite with visitors at Rye Meadow Ranch.

Willow, red and white mini HighPark heifer at Rye Meadow Ranch

Willow

Born: February 2026

Willow is our beautiful red and white mini HighPark heifer with the sweetest personality and just the right amount of playful. She came to us with Teddy from a family who needed to rehome them, and we were incredibly blessed to welcome them both to Rye Meadow Ranch.

Willow also has a special connection to our herd. She originally came from the same farm in Kentucky as Pearl, Annabelle, Paisley, and Alfie, and even made the trip to Florida on the same trailer as them. Now that they're all together again at Rye Meadow, Willow has settled right in with the girls and officially become one of our “Kentucky Girls.”

Paisley, micro mini Highford heifer at Rye Meadow Ranch

Paisley

Born: February 2026

Paisley is our adorable Highford heifer and the smallest member of the Rye Meadow Ranch herd. As a micro mini, she may be tiny in size, but she's impossible to miss with her beautiful long eyelashes and sweet personality. Although she's little, if she's not sleeping, she's usually snacking.

Most of the time, Paisley is calm and content, but when she's ready for more hay or treats, she'll be sure to let you know with her little moo. It may be the smallest moo on the ranch, but it's impossible not to smile when you hear it. Paisley is also one of our “Kentucky Girls” and can usually be found napping alongside Pearl, Annabelle, and Willow.

Pearl, silver Highland cross heifer at Rye Meadow Ranch

Pearl

Born: January 2026

Pearl is our beautiful silver heifer, named for her stunning creamy silver coat. She has a gentle, quiet personality and is the most timid member of the Rye Meadow Ranch herd. While she can be a little shy at first, she warms up quickly if you have a treat in your hand.

The moment Pearl spots the treat bucket or hay cart, she's usually the first to let out an excited moo and the first one waiting at the gate. Her sweet personality, beautiful coloring, and love of treats make her a truly special member of our herd. She's also one of our “Kentucky Girls” and rarely misses their daily nap together.

Annabelle, black tipped Highpark heifer at Rye Meadow Ranch

Annabelle

Born: January 2026

Annabelle is our beautiful black-tipped heifer with a playful, goofy personality. She loves treats, attention, and believes she should be included in absolutely everything happening around the ranch. If there's something going on, you can count on Annabelle being right in the middle of it.

Never shy, Annabelle is usually the first to greet someone new and is always ready to make a new friend. Her curious nature, adorable black spots, and outgoing personality make her one of the biggest characters in the Rye Meadow Ranch herd. She's also one of our “Kentucky Girls” and can usually be found curled up with Pearl, Paisley, and Willow when it's time for their midday nap.

Life in the Herd

Spend enough time around our cattle and you start to notice that they have their own friendships and little social groups. Our herd definitely has its cliques, and who hangs out with who can even change depending on the time of day and what everyone is doing.

The “Kentucky Girls” are Pearl, Annabelle, Paisley, and Willow. All four originally came from the same farm in Kentucky, and Willow even made the trip to Florida on the same trailer as the others before eventually finding her way to Rye Meadow Ranch. When midday nap time rolls around, you can almost always find the “Kentucky Girls” sleeping together.

Then there are “the Littles.” Paisley and Teddy are our micro minis, and our younger bottle babies tend to join them too. When the bigger girls get a little rowdy playing after meals, the Littles usually stick together and stay out of the way.

Our “Highlands” have their own little group too. Penelope, Tilly, Finley, and Teddy can often be found stretched out together for their afternoon naps. Alfie is one of our Highlands too, but as an intact bull, he lives separately from the girls and younger calves.

That brings us to “the Bachelors.” Alfie and Archie are our intact bulls and have grown up together from a young age. They have their own bull pen and are usually found hanging out together. When Finley is around five to six months old, he will leave the heifer side and join Alfie and Archie with the boys.

Of course, none of these groups are official, and there is plenty of overlap. Teddy seems to have membership in both “the Littles” and the “Highlands,” Paisley is both a “Kentucky Girl” and one of “the Littles,” and everyone has their own favorite friends and routines.

Watching those relationships develop is one of our favorite parts of raising a herd. The longer we're around them, the more we realize just how social cattle are and how much personality there is behind every member of Rye Meadow Ranch.
